Tandem skydiving, also referred to as tandem parachuting, is a skydiving method that involves a student skydiver being securely harnessed to a tandem instructor. This experienced instructor guides the student throughout the entire jump, which encompasses the exit from the aircraft, the exhilarating freefall, canopy control, and the precise landing. Unlike other training methods for novice skydivers, tandem skydiving requires minimal instruction, as the instructor oversees most aspects of the jump. Tandem skydive is one of the three commonly adopted methods for introducing beginners to the sport, the alternatives being static line and accelerated freefall.
Who Will Be Your Partner in the Sky?
During a tandem skydive, you’ll be securely attached to an instructor with a wealth of experience and qualifications. The tandem instructor must possess a minimum of 3 years of skydiving experience, having completed at least 500 jumps, and hold a master parachute license issued by a recognized organization accredited by the FAA. At Paragon, we take this expertise a step further, requiring our instructors to have a minimum of 1,500 jumps and the most seasoned skydivers boasting more than 12,000 skydives, along with over two decades in the industry.
Instructors are also mandated to undergo a certification course provided by the manufacturer of the tandem parachute system they will be employing. Additionally, the instructor must maintain an FAA Class III Medical Certificate and successfully complete a USPA Tandem Instructor Rating Course.
As with any sport or activity, a tandem skydive does entail a degree of risk, and potential skydivers should be fully aware of these inherent risks before embarking on their jump.
To contextualize the safety aspect, statistical data reveals that skydiving is remarkably safer than driving a car – in fact, 24 times safer. Moreover, tandem skydiving is 3 times safer than solo skydiving, providing additional reassurance for those considering this exhilarating experience.

The Training Required for Tandem Skydiving
One of the advantages of tandem skydiving is its efficiency. The entire experience can be accomplished in a couple of hours. A short briefing session prepares you for the adventure ahead. During this briefing, you will learn about the correct body positions for exit, maintaining stability, and your responsibilities during landing. We will also teach you about the equipment you will be utilizing for the skydive, even though your skydiving instructor will oversee the equipment’s operation.
